Aging is an irreversible shrinking of the skin except science prove otherwise. It also increases the rate of pigmentation and dullness skin. It often accompanied by disorders and diseases.
Aging is inevitable, but you can still feel and look younger than your years if you know few facts. If you’re fatigued in the middle of the day or notice new lines on your face in the morning, your everyday habits may be adding more years to you than you know. Experts give advice on ways to turn back the clock.
1.STRESS
Nothing takes its toll on your body faster than constant worry, anxiety, or stress. In fact, a 2012 study suggests that job-related stress can have a harmful effect on DNA in your cells.
Researchers measured the length of DNA sections called telomeres and found that people with the most work-related stress had the shortest telomeres, causing cells to die or become damaged, which may speed up the aging process. Additionally, stress can age your brain, increase your blood pressure, and disrupt your sleeping habits, all of which combined can make you look older, as well.
It's hard for most people to reduce the amount of work-related stress they face (and if you can, we want to work where you do!), but hopefully, you can dial it down with just a few simple lifestyle tweaks. Limit the amount of caffeine you drink, avoid processed foods, which can put stress on your digestive system, and try taking up a weekly yoga or meditation session to boost your mood and calm your mind.
2 . HOLDING GRUDGES
Forgiveness is something most of us believe in, but we don’t always practice it. Holding grudges against any person or situation is not good for your health as well as appearance.
If you are not able to forgive, you are adding more stress to your life, which boosts your level of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol leads to weight gain, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.
Stress even leads to more frowning, one of the key causes of wrinkles on the forehead.
A 2005 study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine highlighted the link between lack of forgiveness and reduction in stress. Stress is a common cause of a lot many health problems and also contributes to aging.
Do not allow an old grudge to sap your youthfulness. Practice forgiveness and experience better mental and physical well-being.
3.SUN EXPOSURE
No matter how amazing the sun feels on your body, regular and prolonged exposure to sunrays is one of the worst things you can do for your skin.
Long-term exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun weakens your skin cells and blood vessels, which causes a tanned, leathery-looking skin. It even leads to pigmentation, reduced skin elasticity and a degradation of skin texture.
Also, the risk of skin cancer is significantly higher due to sun exposure .
A 2013 study published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology states that UV exposure seems to be responsible for 80 percent of visible facial aging signs.
Freckles can turn into brown sun spots, the skin takes on a dry, leathery appearance, and wrinkles and sagging increase.
Before going out in the sun, protect your skin by wear a hat, covering up with clothing and using sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, SPF 30 (or higher).
You should apply sunscreen throughout the year. If you like a tanned look, apply a self-tanner rather than soaking up the sunrays.
If you are worried about sun-damaged skin, consult a doctor to reduce existing damage.
4. NOT HAVING ENOUGH SLEEP
Just one night of bad sleep can make you look and feel tired. It can even lead to dark circles and bags under your eyes. Now, imagine what lack of sleep for days can do to your skin appearance.
Sleep deprivation can cause skin damage in several ways. First of all, it can increase your cortisol level, which in turn can worsen inflammatory conditions. Secondly, it can cause poor collagen formation, which leads to skin aging.
In a 2013 study by the University Hospitals Case Medical Center, physician-scientists found that sleep quality impacts skin function and aging.
According to this study, poor sleepers had increased signs of skin aging and slower recovery from several environmental stressors, such as disruption of B the skin barrier or UV radiation.
Staying up late can be fun, but burning the midnight oil can make you look older as you age.
To enjoy beautiful and flawless skin, make sleep a priority and try to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
But avoid sleeping too long on one side of your face, as it can cause wrinkles and sleep lines. Also, use a satin pillow case to avoid fine lines and wrinkles.
5 . SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE
Instead of being inactive and increasing your risk of obesity and other health problems, make exercise a part of your daily life.
Exercise helps tone your muscle and for proper blood flow to your skin, providing the necessary nutrients to the skin cells.
This makes you have a radiating and supple skin.
Exercise also helps combat heart disease, keeps stress at bay, fights brain fog, reduces inflammation, and prevents other chronic diseases that crop up with age.
Get out of your comfort zone and get moving. The American College of Sports Medicine guidelines recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
You can start with the activities you enjoy the most – walking, swimming, jogging, cycling, dancing etc.
6 . CONSUMING MORE SUGAR
Habits That Makes You Age Faster
A sugar-packed diet is a one way ticket to obesity. Also, it can accelerate the skin-aging process and can also make your skin dull and wrinkled.
How does this happen?
There is a process known as glycation, in which sugar molecule attaches to and damage proteins like collagen and elastin. These proteins (elastin and collagen) are important to keep skin flexible and smooth.
A 2009 study published in PLoS Genetics shows a correlation between an increase in age-related diseases and over-consumption of sugar.
It is worthy of note that sugary drinks can lead to obesity, diabetes and heart attacks.
According to a 2014 study published in the American Journal of Public Health, consumption of sugary sodas may accelerate aging process.
Eliminating sugar from your diet is not an easy task especially if you have a sweet tooth.
However, you can try to avoid refined sugar and opt for natural fruits to satisfy your cravings.
Better still, you can try out dark chocolate, which is good for the health due to its high antioxidant content.
7 . IMPROPER SKIN CARE
If you want to have a healthy and flawless skin, it is pertinent to follow a proper skin-care routine.
Different skin type adapts to different skin treatments, thus it is necessary to know your skin type and the type of treatment suitable for your skin.
Irrespective of your skin type, endeavor to wash your face twice daily as well as after exercise or whenever you are sweating.
Sweating causes skin irritation and can cause skin disorders like eczema. By gently washing off or taking a proper bath, will remove dirt, makeup and other substances that may cause skin irritation.
Very importantly, don’t go to bed with your makeup. The chemicals in makeup can block skin pores leading to aging skin. And also please, minimize your makeup if you wish to prevent premature aging.
Also, ensure you exfoliate your skin gently at least once a week to get rid of dead skin cells. Moisturize your skin for a youthful appearance. Endeavor to use the right make up products for your skin type. Don’t use conventional skin-care products, as they contain sulfates, parabens and phthalates – these chemicals have the potentials of altering your hormones and accelerate aging.
8.YOU ARE BECOMING A SLOUCH —LITERALLY.
Slouching over and staring down at our tech devices all day and most of the night is wrecking our posture. Researchers looked at the mobile phone habits of 56 young adults who text on a daily basis. Half of the subjects reported problems with their neck, arms or hands. Those who complained of aches and pains more often tended to text while hunched over.
In another study, preliminary research on college students suggested that the more they texted, the more pain they experienced in their neck and shoulders.
Clearly, our tech addiction is becoming a real pain in the neck. “ Text neck ” is an overuse injury that involves the head, neck and shoulders and is brought on by looking downward at handheld devices such as cell phones, laptops and tablets, which puts excessive strain on the spine. “When you hold your body in an abnormal position, it can increase stress on the muscles, cause fatigue, muscle spasms and even stress headaches,” explains Chris Cornett, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. “With every degree of motion to the front or side that you move your head, the stress on your neck is magnified beyond just the weight of the head.”
9.WAITING UNTIL YOU’RE REALLY HUNGRY BEFORE EATING
Ghrelin (a hormone made by the digestive system that gooses appetite) Waiting too long between meals is one of the surest ways to age the body before its time, says Oz. That’s because hunger pangs can lead to overeating, which may lead to obesity. Here’s how it works: A growling stomach signals “hunger” in the brain by releasing the hormone ghrelin. The problem is that it takes 30 minutes for ghrelin levels to return to normal once you’ve started to nosh. So odds are you’ll overeat.
Don’t wait to eat until you’re ready to chew your arm off; instead, keep a little food in your stomach at all times, advises Oz. Schedule regular snack or meal breaks into your day, and keep a stash of healthy mini-meals available for when you’re on the go. Eat a balance of healthy proteins, carbs and fats at each meal, choosing whole foods (which digest more gradually) whenever possible.
No one eats perfectly all the time. And, as noted, occasional digressions aren’t worth stressing over.
But each of us stands to benefit from improving the eating patterns that are doing our bodies and minds the most harm. Chip away at these worst-offender habits and your odds of feeling great and aging healthfully climb exponentially.
10 . USING ALCOHOL AS STRESS-RELIEF
While a sociable glass of wine a couple of times a week is certainly not an issue, using alcohol as an escape from daily troubles might be making you old before your time. Not only because of the physical effects of the alcohol (like inflammation and a slower metabolism), but also because this indicates issues are being left unresolved and trapped inside.
Try writing down things that are bothering you instead of automatically reaching for a glass at the end of a long day. Even this small action helps shed the load of stress, and may bring clarity and resolution to a problem.
BONUS
HIGHLY PROCESSED AND REFINED FOODS
Foods that have been highly processed and refined not only lack the nutrients needed by the body to support proper functioning, they typically also contain synthetic chemicals and other harmful ingredients that are detrimental to health. These processed foods cause faster tissue breakdown and other cellular damage that leads to faster aging.
Additionally, when the nutrients that the bodily tissues need to function optimally are not optimally supplied, both the function and appearance of the skin and other organs can suffer.
OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS
Too much drug use of any kind causes internal stress on the body that again causes dysfunction, breakdown, and lack of optimal functioning. Depending on the drug, some can cause water loss, loss of healthy fat tissue, toxicity and more that can leave you looking older and more frail.
SMOKING
Smoking is a habit that not only wreaks havoc on your health but certainly speeds up the aging process. Even smoking one cigarette causes a huge amount of oxidative stress. This oxidative stress causes wear and tear on the body’s cells, causing many issues such as aging, wrinkles, and other forms of degeneration.
DEHYDRATION
Being improperly hydrated, especially chronically, surprisingly can make you look more aged. Water is essential for so many roles in the body that without enough of it, the function of the body suffers, which both directly and indirectly, can lead to quicker aging. Water gives your skin the soft, plump, vibrant, moist look that indicates health and youthfulness. Additionally, it helps internally to flush out toxins that can cause acne, red eyes, bags under the eyes, puffiness, and other ailments that certainly don’t scream youthfulness!
YOU CONSTANTLY MULTI-TASK
If that to-do list gets longer, not shorter, by the day, then your overly hectic life may be overly taxing your body. Although multi-tasking is lauded in the media as something to strive for, but you rarely get anything done faster, you just make more stress for yourself. It would be much better for your body to concentrate on one task at a time and finish it before moving onto the next.
